About the zine
1. What is Rebirth Dilemma?
Rebirth Dilemma is a fanzine that comes from love and deep admiration for Neon Genesis Evangelion. Rebirth Dilemma aims to collect a broad range of works inspired by the anime.
2. What is a zine?
A zine (short for magazine) is a self-published, unofficial compendium of art and words, usually based around a specific subject or theme. Zines are usually published in small quantities and usually do not make a profit.
Learn more about zines.
3. What formats will the zine be available in?
Print and web-native formats.
4. Why “Rebirth Dilemma”?
Evangelion is constantly reiterating, reconstructing, and rebirthing its characters into same-but-different scenarios. This tendency is a dilemma for both the viewer and the characters: It challenges canon and forces the viewer to contend with the question of what is real; it also means characters have multiple opportunities to both liberate themselves and repeat the same (or worse) mistakes.
The name “Rebirth Dilemma” seeks to put this aspect of Evangelion front and center, especially now that the entire show is being reborn into an age where fandom is more prevalent and easy-to-access than ever.
About the moderators
1. Who is managing the zine?
Yai and Meta. We met through another anime and immediately bonded over a shared a love for many other pieces of media, including Evangelion.
2. What qualifies you to run a zine?
We have over ten years of combined professional experience in marketing, PR, publishing, and more. We are both detail-oriented and organized people who strive for excellence in everything we do.
About contributing
1. How will the mods communicate with contributors?
We're happy to communicate with contributors whatever way is easiest for them. We have an area on our Discord that contributors can use for discussion and feedback.
2. Will there be a discord for contributors?
Yes.
3. What are the contributor check-ins for?
Check-ins are an opportunity for contributors to get feedback and for the mods to check progress on pieces. We are happy to offer thoughts, guidance, beta-reading, etc. on all pieces.
4. Do I retain ownership of my work if it appears in the zine?
Yes. Artists and writers retain ownership of their work. We just ask that they not distribute the work outside of the zine until a period of time after the zine has been shipped.
About purchasing
1. How much will the zine cost?
This depends in large part on how many contributors we wind up with. Stay tuned for updates.
2. Are you making money off of this?
No. After we cover production costs, all profits will be donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
Learn more about NAMI on Guidestar.
3. How much money from each purchase will be donated?
We plan to make costs transparent as they are finalized so you know exactly how much of your purchase is being donated.
4. When will preorders open?
This is still to be determined; we hope to start taking preorders sometime in fall.
5. When will the zine ship?
This is still to be determined; we hope the zine can ship and the site can go live sometime in winter.
6. Will contributors receive a free copy of the zine?
Contributors will receive free access to the digital zine; whether contributors will also get a free copy of the physical zine will depend in part on costs.
About the application
APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED
1. What kind of work are you looking for?
Rebirth Dilemma aims to collect a range of art and writing inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Work does not necessarily have to be fanart or fanfiction about Eva; it could be something that examines the themes of the show, that came out of an experience with the show, etc.
2. Who can apply?
We encourage all creatives and creators—including new fans—to apply.
3. Do I need to have written about/produced art for Evangelion to apply?
Not at all. Work samples can be from any fandom or original as long as they meet the requirements listed in the application.
4. What kind of work will you publish?
We will consider whatever you can dream up so long as it can be communicated digitally. Below, please find examples of the kinds of work we are interested in including in the zine.
